Discover the Jewel in Dorset's Crown

Published: Thursday 30th Jan 2020

Dorchester is the jewel in Dorset’s crown, not only the County town with a weekly Wednesday market, it also boasts a Roman Town House, ancient hillfort and the home of one of the most important literary figures - Thomas Hardy. Dorchester has a wide choice of restaurants, pubs and shops. From here you can explore the surrounding countryside and its magical villages – like Cerne Abbas, Sydling St Nicholas and Charminster. The County Museum is due to open again this summer after a programme of refurbishment and extension and makes a great day out with all the family.

Throughout the year there are numerous events and celebrations – from free, live music in Maumbury Rings to The Thomas Hardy Festival and the Dorset County Show, there is always something happening to entertain!

The traditional seaside resort of Weymouth with its wide sandy beaches and choice of water sports is only a few miles away. Days out close by include Weymouth Sea Life Centre, Monkey World and Bovington Tank Museum.
